It is narrated from Aisha, Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ibn Mas’ud, Saubaan, Abi Zar, Jabir, Anas, Ma’az ibn Jabal and Imran ibn Haseen that the Messenger of Allah (ص) said:

﴿ اَلنَّظَرُ إلَی وَجْهِ عَلِيٍّ عِبَادَةٌ ﴾

Dailami, Firduas Al-Akhbar, V.5, page 42; Ibn Asaker, Tarikh Madinah-Damishq, V.40, page 9; V.42, page 350-355; Ibn Athir, Al-Nihayah, V.5, page 77. In this book, Ibn Athir has translated this hadith as such: “Whenever Ali appeared among the people, they would surprisingly say, "La Ilaha illallah, what a good and luminous face he has; La Ilaha illallah how wise this gallant man is; La Ilaha illallah, how noble and honorable this spirited man is, i.e. how heedful he is, La Ilaha illallah, how courageous this young man is." Hence, such visit prompted people towards monotheism.

Also, refer to Abu Na’im Esfahani, Hilyatul Auliya, V.2, page 183; Haithami, Majma’e al-Zavaed, V.9, page 119; Khatib Baghdadi in Tarikh-e-Baghdad (V.2, p.49) narrates from Abu-Huraira as saying, “I saw Mu’az ibn Jabal looking at Ali-ibn-Abi Talib’s face continually. At one point, I said to him, ‘Why do you keep on looking at Ali’s face for a long time as if you had never seen him before?’ He read the aforementioned hadith.

This hadith has been narrated by Ibn Marduyeh Esfahani (in Manaqib, page 75) as per Suyuti’s narration in Al-La’ali al-Masnu’ah; Hakim Naishapuri in Al-Mustadrak (V.3, page 141-142); Kharazmi in Al-Manaqib (page 361-362); Ibn Maghzali in Manaqib (page 172-176); Suyuti in Tarikh al-Khulafa (page 189); Ibn Hajar Asqalani in Al-Isabah (V.8, p.308); Abu Na’im Esfahani in Hilyatul Auliya (V.2, p.183); Ibn Kathir in Al-Bidaya wa'l-Nihaya, (V.7, p.394). And Ibn Hajar Haithami in al-Sawa’iq al-Muharraqa (page 133, 177) has said that many of the Prophet’s companions have narrated that the chain of transmitters goes back to 12 of the Prophet’s companions.

Haithami, Majma’e al-Zavaed, V.9, page 119 (Chapter concerning looking at the face of Ali). In this book the author narrates from Taliq bin Muhammad as saying: I saw Imran bin Haseen taking a good look at Ali. He was questioned about this matter and he replied, “I heard the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) saying: “Looking at Ali’s face is worship.”
