It is narrated from Abdullah ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah (ص) said:
"Ali is my brother in this world and the hereafter"
Salehi Shami, Subulul Huda wal Rashad, V.11, page 297; Tirmidhi in Jam'i as-Sahih (V.5, page 300). It is narrated from Ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah (s.aw.a.) made a covenant of brotherhood among his companions (Ali was left aside at that moment). He approached the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) with tearful eyes and said, “O Prophet of Allah, you made covenant of brotherhood between your companions but I was left without bond of brotherhood with anyone.” The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) replied: “You are my brother in this world and the hereafter.”
Hakim Naishapuri in Al-Mustadrak (V.3, p.14), Suyuti in Al-Jami' as-Saghir (V.2, page 176) and in the book Al-Manaqib, Sayedna Ali (a.s.), it is narrated from Zaid ibn Arqam that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) said to Ali: “You are my brother and my friend.” And in Firduas Al-Akhbar, (Dailami, V.3, page 15, hadith 4182), it is narrated that the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said, “Ali is my brother and cousin”.
Ibn Asaker narrates from Abbas that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) said, “The best among my brothers is Ali, and the best among my uncles is Hamza”. Ibn Asaker, Tarikh Madinah-Damishq, V.42, page 61, and refer to Haythami, Maj’mah al-Zawaid, V.9, page 111 (chapter concerning status and kinship). It is worthy to mention that the hadith of kinship is a famous hadith among the different sects and the bond of brotherhood was done more than once.
In another hadith in Musnad, in the chapter concerning kinship, it is narrated from Zaid ibn Abi Awfi that when Ali (a.s.) grieved over the delay in his bond of brotherhood, the holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said, “By the Almighty Allah Who appointed me as a Prophet, the reason I kept silent was only to choose you as a brother for myself. You are my brother and your position to me is like the position of Aaron’s to Moses except that there would be no Prophet after me, and you are my brother and heir.”
Ali (a.s.) said, “What will I inherit from you, O the Messenger of Allah?”
The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said, “Whatever the previous Prophets have left behind as inheritance.
Ali (a.s.) said, “What did the previous Prophets leave behind?”
The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said, “The Book of Allah and the Sunnah (tradition) of His Messengers. You will be with me in my palace in Paradise along with my daughter Fatimah, and you are my brother and friend”.
This hadith has been mentioned by Ahmad in Manaqib Ali. Refer to Muttaqi Hindi, Kanz al-Ummal, V.13, page 105-106.
I say, "How worthy it is that when the lover of Ali, at the time of mentioning the hadiths of “Brotherhood”, which is a widely transmitted narration, chants these couplets that are attributed to Amir al-Mu’minin. The translation of the poems as per Kanz al-Ummal (Muttaqi Hindi, V.13, p.112) is as follows:
The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) is my brother and father-in-law, and Hamza Sayyid as-Shuhada (chief of the martyrs) is my uncle.
And Ja'far Tayyar, who (in Heaven) flies with the angels in the morning and evening, is my brother.
